Malibu Middle School proudly offers an after-school, interscholastic sports program with 10+ sports each year. Malibu Education Foundation launched the program in Spring 2024 with the seed funding support from the City of Malibu.
Participation is strong! The Spring Season launched with 130 MMS athletes (nearly half the school) and the Fall season has over 150 students registered - 62% of the school participates in after school sports!
The teams compete in the FIYA league, a middle school league which allows for the flexibility a small school like Malibu Middle needs, while offering the ability to build a robust, interscholastic athletics program for our students. The sports offerings for 2024-25 are:
Fall Sports: Girls/Boys Flag Football, Girls Volleyball, Cross-Country
Winter Sports: Girls/Boys Basketball, Cheer/Dance, eSports, and we will also offer Girls/Boys Strength & Conditioning.
Spring Sports: Girls/Boys Soccer, Co-Ed Volleyball, Track & Field, Tennis, Strength & Conditioning, Cheer
The Malibu Middle School Athletics program is a no-cut program, to encourage broad participation and multi-sport athletics.
For specific questions related to the program, please email Daryl Adams at dadams@smmusd.org or text Daryl at 323-595-4042.
LET’s KEEP THIS GOING!
Seed funding enabled us to launch this program and, as we seek long-term funding support, we need donations to keep this program going in the short term.
This chart provides a snapshot of the allocation of dollars needed to run this annual program.
The benefits go beyond the field. Middle school athletics:
Promotes Physical Health: Encourages regular exercise, helping students build lifelong healthy habits.
Boosts Academic Performance: Physical activity has been shown to improve focus, concentration, and academic achievement.
Fosters Teamwork & Leadership: Students develop essential life skills like collaboration, communication, and leadership through team sports.
Builds Confidence & Resilience: Participation in athletics helps students gain self-esteem, overcome challenges, and build mental toughness.
Enhances Social Connections: Sports create a sense of belonging, strengthen friendships, and build a positive school community.
Teaches Discipline & Time Management: Balancing sports with academics teaches responsibility and effective time management.
Encourages Lifelong Sportsmanship: Students learn the importance of fair play, respect, and perseverance both on and off the field.

FIYA offers the flexibility to register our teams shortly prior to the season begins, allowing us to determine whether we have enough players for a team prior to registering with the league.
-
For the current start up status of our organization, aligning to the sports of the FIYA League is our best, current solution and we have budgeted for those sports.
if you'd like to propose a new sport to add to our program, we are putting together a request form which would require a commitment from 20 students/parents to participate. With the interest confirmed, Daryl will explore the possibility with coaches, competition and budget.
-
We ask that students register for one sport per season, to ensure the dedication to the team and availability for gams.
We highly encourage students to try different sports each season.
-
There is no cost to participate. League fees, coaches and uniforms, and some travel are funded by Malibu Education Foundation.
We do recommend making a donation to Malibu Education Foundation to support the continuation of this program if your family is in a position to do so.
-
At the start of each season, the Athletic Coordinator (Daryl) will work with the coaches to determine the two practice days each week for each sport.
-
The game schedule is determined at the start of the program by the FIYA League based on which schools registered. They create a series of games with schools in similar geographic areas.
The Athletic Coordinator works with FIYA to request home games and preferences on game days.
Games are always weekdays, and we plan to target Thursday and Fridays.
-
We don't have the budget to book buses for every game, and are looking at using the transportation budget to purchase a van.
The van(s) won't solve all transportation needs, but it will offset the needs and provide a longer term solution for our program.
With the overwhelming response to the program and the limited transportation budget, we are asking parents to help out as we work through some solutions and:
Get approved to volunteer to drive teammates to game.
Identify a team parent to help coordinate rides with approved drivers, if needed.
-
No. This is for all levels and abilities.
This is an opportunity for students to try out different sports before High School, to play on a team with classmates against other schools, and to learn the benefits of being a multi-sport athlete.
